Package: ghostscript
Version: 8.64~dfsg-12
Severity: important

Hello,
since yesterday, when ghostscript was migrated to testing, printing on my
Samsung ML-2571N [0] printer is no longer possible, the following error gets
logged to /var/log/cups/error_log:
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] [Job 103] May not be a PDF file (continuing
> anyway)
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] [Job 103] PDF file is damaged - attempting to
> reconstruct xref table...
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] [Job 103] Couldn't find trailer dictionary
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] [Job 103] Couldn't read xref table
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] PID 6242 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pstopdf)
> stopped with status 139!
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:00 +0200] PID 6244 (/usr/lib/cups/filter/pdftopdf)
> stopped with status 1!
> E [28/Jun/2009:15:48:01 +0200] [Job 103] Job stopped due to filter errors.

A reinstallation of CUPS and ghostscript - as was suggested by several people -
with prior purging of all related packages didn't result in a working system. A
downgrade to 8.64~dfsg-1+squeeze1 restored the functionality.

The printer is used with the attached PPD over Ethernet (LPD).

The reason why I reported this bug against ghostscript is, that only ghostscript
was updated yesterday and before that update everything worked fine. If this is
due to some bug in CUPS uncovered by the recent ghostscript update, please feel
free to reassign it to CUPS.

If you should need more information, please feel free to ask for it and I'll try
to provide that information.

Kind regards,
Kai Wasserbäch

Hi Kai,

cups needs features now separated in ghostscript-cups.

This was requested by the cups maintainer, so should not come as a
surprise. Cups properly recommends ghostscript-cups.

Problem is that the recommendation occured before that recommended
package had arrived in testing, so it was not proposed by packaging
tools like aptitude.

I believe the situation could be improved by documenting the new
recommendation in a NEWS file in the cups package, and I have shared my
view with the cups package maintainer.

This is not a bug in ghostscript - and private emails indicates that the
cups maintainer apparently consider it a non-bug there too.

If you disagree then please consider raising the issue at the cups
package rather than here.

Thanks for reporting - I close it again, however.
