Well I've been using maildrop with exim for some time now with no problems.
However I recently redid my exim config (using eximconfig) and it created a
new config with "return_output" set.
Due to an iffy internet connection, the next day my mailfilter (using
spamassassin) hung for a while so maildrop killed off the program (fine),
printed "maildrop: Timeout quota exceeded." and then exited with code 75
(temporary error).
Unfortunately since exim had "return_output" set, this immediately bounced
each email :-( After a bit of digging around, I found the cause and the
fix - use "return_fail_output" instead (and add log_defer_output to catch
the errors).
I think this is a poor default, it caused me to lose many
emails and also caused lots of junk replies to lots of people for which I
can only apologise. I think it would be better if it was set to:
return_fail_output
log_defer_output
log_fail_output
Thanks
Adrian

Upstream development on exim3 stopped more than three years ago. As Sarge
has been released, Debian's default MTA is now exim4. The maintainer of the
exim 3 packages has stated that he will not be changing the functionality of
the packages in any significant way, so I'm closing this report. (c.f.
