Package: reportbug
Version: 2.31
Severity: normal
When I use querybts, I sometimes get bizarre characters on my
terminal, looking something like what is copied below at the bottom
(cut and paste).
When logging in as user swift or root from console, my bash startup
files set LANG=en_US.UTF-8. I see the problem from the console unless
I unset LANG, e.g., "LANG= querybts ppp". If I su from swift to root
in the console, the same thing happens.
In XTerm windows under KDE3 and under Enlightenment, when I start an
xterm ("/usr/bin/X11/xterm -geometry 130x70+150+0 -fn 7x14 -bg white
-fg black") as user swift, I do *not* see the problem, even when
LANG=en_US.UTF-8. If I su to root, I also do not see the problem.
This is the strange case; otherwise the pattern would be simply the
setting of LANG.
In XTerm windows which I start as root with the program "super", I
*do* see the problem. As in the console, it can be corrected by
unsetting LANG. Same thing if I su here to user swift.
I see no change in behavior bewteen settings of encoding = "ascii" and
encoding = "utf-8" in /etc/python2.3/site.py.
The parts of my ~/.Xresources that may affect xterms are:
*VT100.Background: white
*VT100.Foreground: black
XTerm*scrollBar: on
XTerm*saveLines: 5000
XTerm*jumpScroll: on
*Paned.Text.translations: #override\n\ Shift<Btn4Down>,<Btn4Up>:
scroll-one-line-down()\n\ Shift<Btn5Down>,<Btn5Up>: scroll-one-line-up()\n\
Ctrl<Btn4Down>,<Btn4Up>: previous-page()\n\ Ctrl<Btn5Down>,<Btn5Up>:
next-page()\n\
None<Btn4Down>,<Btn4Up>:scroll-one-line-down()scroll-one-line-down()scroll-one-line-down()scroll-one-line-down()scroll-one-line-down()\n\
None<Btn5Down>,<Btn5Up>:scroll-one-line-up()scroll-one-line-up()scroll-one-line-up()scroll-one-line-up()scroll-one-line-up()\n\
The messed-up terminal looks something like this, i.e., you can figure
it out but it looks all wrong:

Thanks for the fast check, I'm closing this bug now.
