kde is kde4 of sid.

having nm-apllet running and doing "Save Session" i expect nm-apllet to
be rn he next time i login to kde -- but it never happens. i always have
to start it myself.
seems it never really makes it into the stored session.

That's a feature actually, not a bug.
If you want to have nm-applet started in the KDE session, edit it's autostart
file /etc/xdg/autostart/nm-applet.desktop and remove the NotShowIn=KDE; key.
