If there is in fact a subtle reason for this behavior that I'm missing in my ignorance, please accept my apologies. -- System Information: Debian Release: lenny/sid APT prefers unstable APT policy: (500, 'unstable') Architecture: i386 (i686) Kernel: Linux 2.6.24-1-686 (SMP w/1 CPU core) Locale: LANG=en_US.UTF-8, LC_CTYPE=en_US.UTF-8 (charmap=UTF-8) Shell: /bin/sh linked to /bin/bash Versions of packages lvm2 depends on: ii libc6 2.7-8 GNU C Library: Shared libraries ii libdevmapper1.02.1 2:1.02.24-3 The Linux Kernel Device Mapper use ii libreadline5 5.2-3 GNU readline and history libraries lvm2 recommends no packages. -- no debconf information

It's a oddity/specialty of the old (non-dependency-based) boot ordering start symlinks in runlevel 0 and 6 are called with the stop! argument on shutdown/reboot. as lvm potentially hosts the / fs, it needs to be stopped just before the actual shutdown/reboot. In summary, everything works as it is supposed to, thus closing.
