Non-ASCII characters in the Spanish translation for menu names and other
application text show up as character boxes.
Start the program with LANG=es (I use es_AR, actually) and you'll find
Settings|Metrónomo apperas as Metr.omo, where . represents the character box.
This is probably caused due a wrong encoding specification in the source of the
Spanish translation.
