When I try to save a file with README.Debian mode, it tries to include the line:

 -- Marco Túlio Gontijo e Silva <[email protected]>, Mon, 12 Jan 2009
17:53:07 -0200

My user name is:

$ getent passwd marcot | cut -d: -f5 | cut -d, -f1
Marco Túlio Gontijo e Silva

So it's replacing the ú character with ú.
