Package: kvm
Version: 85+dfsg-4
Severity: wishlist
Usertags: 3.0-quilt-by-default

To prepare a possible switch to the new source package format "3.0
(quilt)" [1], I converted all source packages and rebuilt the packages
afterwards to see what breaks, and kvm does break. To reproduce the
problem you can do this:
$ apt-get source kvm
$ mkdir -p kvm-85+dfsg/debian/source
$ echo "3.0 (quilt)" >kvm-85+dfsg/debian/source/format
$ dpkg-source -b kvm-85+dfsg
$ dpkg-source -x kvm_85+dfsg-4.dsc
$ cd kvm-85+dfsg && debuild -us -uc

In this process, if the .diff.gz contains changes to upstream files,
dpkg-source will have created a corresponding patch in
debian/patches/debian-changes-85+dfsg-4 and will have registered that
patch in a quilt series (debian/patches/series, it is created if needed).
All the patches listed in the "series" file are applied directly during
the extraction (dpkg-source -x). quilt itself is used if available (and
will thus lead to the creation of the .pc directory), otherwise
dpkg-source applies the patches by itself. For more information about the
new source package format see the manual page dpkg-source(1).

In the case of kvm, one of the quilt patch modifies something that
is stored inside the .diff.gz (or depends on some change stored in the
.diff.gz). The converted package has the .diff.gz changes at the end of
the quilt series and thus the former patches do not apply cleanly anymore.

Please integrate any relevant changes in a quilt patch and drop the other
changes in the .diff.gz.

Cheers,

You filled the bug http://bugs.debian.org/538632 in Debian BTS
against the package kvm. I'm closing it at *unstable*, but it will
remain open for older distributions.

For more information about this package's removal, read
http://bugs.debian.org/562620. That bug might give the reasons why
this package was removed and suggestions of possible replacements.

Don't hesitate to reply to this mail if you have any question.

Thank you for your contribution to Debian.
