Package: libpam-modules
Version: 1.0.1-5+lenny1
Severity: important
When upgrading a neglected machine from Sarge to Lenny, aptitude
dist-upgrade failed because the package libpam-modules was not
permitted to overwrite the file '/usr/share/man/man5/limits.conf.5.gz'.
'dpkg --install --force-overwrite
/var/cache/apt/archives/libpam-modules_1.0.1-5+lenny1_i386.deb' allowed
upgrade to proceed, without apparent problems.
Thanks,
Charles

That's not a supported upgrade path. If you had upgraded to etch before
upgrading to lenny, you should not have seen such an error.
(At least, no package in etch ships /usr/share/man/man5/limits.conf.5.gz;
I'm assuming the conflict you found was with some older package in sarge,
which I can't easily check, but you only included half the error message, so
it's hard to say. Anyway, not a bug we're going to be fixing in a stable
release update for pam.)
