Package: mysql-server
Version: 3.23.49-8
Severity: normal

Hi Christian,

I'am running Debian GNU/Linux "Sarge" on an i386 computer.
I've made a separated partition for the MySQL server data :

$ mount | grep mysql
/dev/hda13 on /var/lib/mysql type ext3 (rw)

It's a ext3 file system with a .journal file.

# ls -l /var/lib/mysql/.journal
-rw------- 1 root root 8388608 Feb 21 2004 /var/lib/mysql/.journal

The properties of the .journal file can not be changed.

When I try to upgrade my mysql-server package, upgrade fail with the
fallowing error message :

Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld.
chgrp: changing group of `/var/lib/mysql/.journal': Operation not
permitted
dpkg: error processing
/var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server_4.0.24-10_i386.deb (--unpack):
subprocess pre-installation script returned error exit status 123
Stopping MySQL database server: mysqld.
Errors were encountered while processing:
 /var/cache/apt/archives/mysql-server_4.0.24-10_i386.deb
E: Sub-process /usr/bin/dpkg returned an error code (1)

I suggest to ignore chgrp retrurn value and continue the
installation/upgrade process.

Best Regards,
