other players still work such as xine (audio-video) and mpg123.
Both ogg123 and mpg123 show similar error messages, but ogg displays one
additional (cannot find device alsa09) and exits.
I do not have listing for I flipped to another environment for now, but
if needed I can reboot and get it.
HW: ThinkPad-T42
SW: latest Deb-Sid updates as of 23Jan2006.
No problems with ogg123 prior to this currently with prior versions
running on same PC, only changes were applying updates after two weeks.
I backed out and redid updates to verify.

This was probably caused from move from alsa09 -> alsa.
