Package: bind9
Version: 1:9.2.2+9.2.3rc4-1
Severity: normal
The default root-delegation-only exclude needs at least one more entry, for
the TLD ".name". Here's why:
.name domains are set up to be email forwarders. People can purchase domains
such as first.last.name and have email forwarders set up as [email protected],
but last.name is not a valid domain.
Now if that person needs to send e-mail, sendmail will automatically reject
it because the domain is invalid, and bind returns NXDOMAIN for last.name
instead of resolving it to an address.
I suggested using his own (or his ISP's) SMTP server as an alternative solution
but then I realized one other thing.
I cannot send e-mail to him either, because last.name is not a valid domain and
therefore has no MX record, and last.name does not resolve to an address.
Anyway, please include .name in the root-delegation-only exclude list.
Thanks for your attention.
