Currently, the netbase package only 'Recommends' ifupdown:
Package: netbase
State: installed
Automatically installed: no
Version: 4.34
Priority: important
Section: admin
Maintainer: Marco d'Itri <[email protected]>
Uncompressed Size: 98.3k
Depends: lsb-base (>= 3.0-6)
Recommends: ifupdown
Conflicts: inetutils-inetd (< 2:1.4.3+20060719-3), openbsd-inetd (<
0.20050402-3)
Description: Basic TCP/IP networking system
This package provides the necessary infrastructure for basic TCP/IP
based networking.
However, removing the ifupdown package results in a broken networking
init script due to the following line:
[ -x /sbin/ifup ] || exit 0
Since it is perfectly acceptable to configure APT to only install
'Depends', the ifupdown dependency should be removed, or it should be
moved to the Depends section.
Thanks,
Sol

No, it should not. If you do not install ifupdown you cannot expect
this script to work. If you disable installing recommended packages you
are on your own.
