Package: mpg321
Version: 0.2.10.1
Severity: important
Some MP3s "play" as complete silence using mpg321. mpg123 plays them
correctly. This is *not* a sound-card issue: mpg321 "converts" these
mp3s to totally silent .wav files, as well. I *believe* that this has
to do with irregulat ID3 tags which (possibly) overwrite some of the MP3
header information? mpg123 sometimes says "junk at the beginning, skipping"
on these files, although not always. So this *seems* to be an issue of
mpg321 being more particular about mp3-format compliance. *BUT* the
correct behavior of mpg321 should be either to (1) gracefully recover
from the file corruption, or (2) print an error message and fail;
I just managed to record a CD-R with 45 minutes of silence because
the machine I was burning on does not have a sound card. I assumed
that if mpg321 was converting to a .wav w/o complaining that the
resulting .wav would be more or less correct.
I can provide example .mp3s on request.

mpg321 produced silent .wavs and played silence on some mp3s that had
bad CRC checksums on every frame. That was due to some really
brain-damaged encoders that produced these mp3s. Bug fixed in
version 0.2.11-1.
