hiya,
as '~' is a special character wrt git and references, it's currently
being replaced by '.' when git-buildpackage generates tags.
this is not ideal because:
* '.' is already a valid character and not distinct from a "real" '.'
* '.' does not sort equivalently to ~
while i'm not sure there's anything we could do about the latter (thus
the output of git tag will never be correctly sortable), i think for
the former you could use a character which is not a valid character in a
"debian version", such that someone could pipe their list of tags through
a sed expression and get something that sorts correctly.
for example, you could use '_', '#', or '/' (a similar technique could
be used with a second "alternate" character to solve the same problem
for epochs).
my personal preference is to use '_' in place of '~' because it's the most
readable and pleasant on the eyes, and maybe '#' for epochs.
