Hi,
Currently, mawk is priority required while gawk is priority
optional. So mawk is installed by default while gawk isn't. However,
if gawk is installed, it becomes the default awk because it has a
higher alternatives priority than mawk. (The reason mawk has a lower
priority, according to its changelog, is that mawk is unmaintained
upstream and has bugs.)
I think this is inconsistent. If gawk is the default awk, then gawk
should have priority required and mawk optional.

This is entirely deliberate. gawk has a higher alternative priority if
installed because it's a more featureful awk; it is also much *larger* than
mawk and should not be installed by default. There is no requirement that
package priorities and alternative priorities be consistent.
So no bug here.
