Package: postgresql-8.4
Version: 8.4.4-1+b1
Severity: grave
Justification: renders package unusable

I installed (via apt-get) postgresql-8.4, on a fresh (debootstrapped) system,
then ran dpkg -P postgresql-8.4, then ran apt-get install postgresql-8.4.
postgres would not start and the apt-get install fails to complete. I get
this error message when running /etc/init.d/postgresql-8.4 start:

r...@otrs-tmp2:/var/log/postgresql# cat postgresql-8.4-main.log
2010-07-30 08:07:16 PDT LOG: could not bind IPv4 socket: Cannot assign
requested address
2010-07-30 08:07:16 PDT HINT: Is another postmaster already running on port
5432? If not, wait a few seconds and retry.
2010-07-30 08:07:16 PDT WARNING: could not create listen socket for "localhost"
2010-07-30 08:07:16 PDT FATAL: could not create any TCP/IP sockets

There was nothing listening on localhost:5432 after the init.d script had
errored out (checked via telnet localhost 5432)

If I edit postgresql.conf so that it has the line "listen_addresses = '*'"
instead of "listen_addresses = 'localhost'", then the init.d script works and
apt-get install completes.
