The subject says it all. nvidia-settings 1.0+20060516-1 is not compatible with
nvidia-glx-legacy 1.0.7174-4.
$ nvidia-settings
ERROR: NV-CONTROL extension version 1.6 is too old; the minimimum required
version is 1.9.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA GPUs on ':0.0'.
ERROR: Unable to determine number of NVIDIA Frame Lock Devices on ':0.0'
Downgrading to nvidia-settings_1.0+20051122-1_i386.deb solves the problem.
You may want to resurrect this version as nvidia-settings-legacy if nvidia
doesn't release updated/compatible legacy drivers soon.

The 71xx legacy drivers no longer work with with current xserver 1.7 in
squeeze (last supported version was xserver 1.4 in lenny) (see #596471).
Therefore we don't need to fix 71xx support here.
I'm now closing this bug report.
