Following text in GERMAN, because it's easier for me, and required
anyway to resolve the issue in the german language package.
Hallo,
die deutsche Handbuchseite free(1) ist stark veraltet. Sie stammt
nach der Fußzeile aus 2002, ist aber wohl nur eine Übersetzung der
englischen aus dem Jahr 1993.
Die Probleme im einzelnen:
1) Nützliche Option "-l" nicht dokumentiert.
"free --help" zeigt unter anderem folgendes an:
" -l show detailed low and high memory statistics"
Die OPtion führt dazu, daß die Summenzeile für niedrigen und hohen
Speicher (>4GiB) getrennt werfolgt.
Weder die englische, noch die deutsche Seite dokumentieren diesen
Parameter. Siehe auch die Fehlermeldung Nummer #534198 (procps).
Ich schlage folgende Formulierung vor:
Der Schalter -l zeigt zusätzlich an, wieviel vom gesamten, benutzten und
freien Speicher auf hohen (vom Kernel nicht direkt erreichbaren) und
wieviel auf niedrigen (direkt erreichbaren) Speicher entfällt.
2) Größenangaben
"free" gibt den Speicher neben Bytes - wie üblich - in Einheiten von
2^10 (-k), 2^20 (-m), 2^30 (-g) an, was mangels frühzeitiger Normung im
Sprachgebrauch als "Kilobytes" (kB) und so weiter bezeichnet wird. Im
Interesse der Eindeutigkeit sollten jedoch hier die modernen Kürzel
"kiB", "MiB" und "GiB" verwendet werden.
