other comment: apt-cacher-ng is installed as the primary software on a vserver,
to be used as an apt proxy for other servers (physical and virtual) within the
same rack. it is currently dying randomly, since the last upgrade last weekend.
it dies with this line in /var/log/syslog :

        Feb 25 16:30:05 servername kernel: [931868.238742]
apt-cacher-ng[24798]: segfault at 70 ip 00007f42a19c80f8 sp 00000000415e1d30
error 4 in libc-2.7.so[7f42a1917000+14a000]

i am not sure how to investigate this problem further...

solidarity,
