Package: passwd
Version: 1:4.1.4.2-1
Severity: normal

When using "passwd" to append one character to an eight character
password, it claims that the new password is not different, and
then prompts me to choose a different new password.

The actual check of password validity is performed by PAM.
It might be the case that at that time, PAM was configured by default to
drop characters after the 8th one.

Please reassign to PAM if you have to reopen.
