The reason not to do it is to keep package hints tight.

Debian as a distribution supports upgrades from one major release to the 
next major release, but does not support packages older than 
($current-release - 2).

The reason I hesitate even posting this is that I really have little 
interest debating such issue which really belongs as a bugreport against 
that old Python package, not this one.
