Package: postgresql-common
Version: 114
Severity: normal
Hi, I sometimes get errors like the following:
/etc/init.d/postgresql restart
Restarting PostgreSQL 8.4 database server: main.
Restarting PostgreSQL 9.0 database server: mainThe PostgreSQL server failed to
start.
Please check the log output: ... failed!
failed!
However, the 8.4 log showed:
2011-03-07 02:58:05 CST LOG: database system was shut down at 2011-03-07 02:57:
28 CST
2011-03-07 02:58:05 CST LOG: database system is ready to accept connections
2011-03-07 02:58:05 CST LOG: autovacuum launcher started
2011-03-07 02:58:05 CST LOG: incomplete startup packet
and the 9.0 log showed:
2011-03-07 02:58:56 CST LOG: database system was shut down at 2011-03-07 02:42:
11 CST
2011-03-07 02:58:56 CST LOG: database system is ready to accept connections
2011-03-07 02:58:56 CST LOG: autovacuum launcher started
and both processes are running:
postgres 6127 1 6 02:57 ? 00:00:08
/usr/lib/postgresql/8.4/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/postgresql/8.4/main -c
config_file=/etc/postgresql/8.4/main/postgresql.conf
postgres 6167 1 8 02:58 ? 00:00:07
/usr/lib/postgresql/9.0/bin/postgres -D /var/lib/postgresql/9.0/main -c
config_file=/etc/postgresql/9.0/main/postgresql.conf
It appears as if sometimes the startup script returns incorrect information
about whether the startup failed or succeeded.
