Package: imapproxy
Version: 1.2.3-1
Severity: important

If the imap daemon is down for more than momentarily when imapproxy is
started, imapproxy runs out of the hardcoded limit of 10 retries and
_EXITS_. This means imapproxy turns short service breaks into permanent
breaks until it is manually restarted. This is just unacceptable.

Yes, it only happens at imapproxy startup time, but it is more likely
to happen than you might first think: a setup with two machines, one
running webmail+imapproxy and one running the imap daemon, booting up
at the same time, triggers it reliably.

Service startup should be reliable. Temporary outages should be
reflected to clients as temporary outages.

I personally think SetBannerAndCapability() should just sleep+retry
infinitely, while logging the error situation once in a while.

I just noticed imapproxy does DNS name resolution just once, in a
similar way as the above connect() thing. This means temporary
DNS outage during startup leads to an exit also. Starting up a webmail
server without a network connection thus becomes fatal.

Which leads us to a third bug: if the IMAP server hostname is changed to
point to a new address, imapproxy never sees it. It effectively caches
a DNS lookup with to time-to-live, which is bad behaviour.

Which leads us to a fourth bug: imapproxy caches the imapd banner
and capabilities. If the imap daemon is upgraded, reconfigured, or
replaced with a different software, imapproxy will likely lie to
its clients.
