I think I got hit by this bug:

The Alt key doesn't behave like before in gnome-terminal since I upgraded
from 3.2.1-1 to 3.2.2-1. Alt used to behave like Meta in programs like
the Midnight Commander.
Downgrading to 3.2.1-1 solves the problem.
