Package: aptitude
Version: 2.11.1-2
Severity: Important

I have Woody with aptitude installed from official CD set, and have
attempted to upgrade to unstable (as of around 8/26/2002) and Gnome2 from
experimental (both packages list downloaded from ftp.pl.debian.org and
feeded off-line by copying files under appropriate names in
/var/lib/apt/lists because my Debian box doesn't have internet
connection). I've marked packages by dist-upgrade and selected gnome2
metapackage along with other gnome packages. Of course, some packages
broke due to various conficts and replacements with Gnome 1.4 , but I've
managed to correct it with exception of gnome2 itself and gnome-utils &
gnome-games, both needed by gnome2. The situation is as follows:

(1) aptitude reports 2 broken packages: gnome2, gnome-utils

(2) gnome2 depends on gnome utils (>=2.0.something) but there is
gnome-utils (1.4.1.something) selected for upgrade which conflicts with
gnome-utils (2.0.x). Manually selecting version 2.0.x for installation
solves this.

(3) gnome2 depends on gnome-games (>=2.0.x) but it conflicts with
gnome-games-locales needed by gnome-games(1.4.x) Manually selecting
gnome-games (2.0.x) solves deps automatically and everything is OK now.

(4) gnome2 has all of its dependencies met, so no broken pkgs present.

(5) I quit aptitude. It writes selection states.

(6) I run aptitude again - 2 packages broken - gnome2 & gnome-utils -
back to (1).

I tried to run install/upgrade before quitting, as it helped to solve
some problems with dependencies changed beetwen packages version, but it
didn't help. Now I'm unable to choose (exactly) my wanted packages set
because aptitude refuses to save it. Most of it is selected, but there
are still some packages left.
