Package: gnome-shell
Version: 3.2.2.1-1
Severity: normal

My gnome3/gnome-shell experience has not been very good so far. I have
installed gnome-shell on several up to date wheezy computers. On all of them,
the Applications menu is unusable because it is so slow to show any icons. On
some of the systems, it takes several minutes to show anything when going to
the Activities and clicking on Applications. I have noticed that there are a
lot of duplicate icons and there are also a lot of icons for applications that
are not installed anymore. I don't know if all of this cruft is causing the
slowness or not. I can use the Main Menu application to clean some of this up.
I have found that the duplicates and uninstalled items are all in the "Other"
menu. When I uncheck the item it does go away. I cannot delete the item line
though. I try to right click and select delete on the uninstalled items but
nothing happens. My wheezy install is clean in that I do not have any orphaned
packages installed. Where is the Other menu item picking up all of this old
junk and is there a way to clear it out. I only install applications using
Synaptic or apt-get directly. An example of items showing up that are not
installed anymore is Emacs 22 which hasn't been installed for a long time.
Something is not being handled correctly with the menu items when gnome-shell
is being installed making the Activities->Applications method of selecting
applications to start unusable. Due to the unusability of the Applications
menu, I have gone to opening everything using Synapse which I actually like.
The typical user though probably will not do that and consider gnome-shell
unusable. Which it is if it takes several minutes to show the application
icons to start a program.

The duplicate .desktop files are not really a problem of gnome-shell (so
I'm going to close this bug).
For the slow loading of the Application menu there is already the
aforementioned bug report.

Regarding menu-xdg, I intend to drop the Recommends from the gnome
meta-package. This seems to be a left-over from older releases.
