For years, mpi-doc and lam4-dev have conflicted, due to one file
conflict: /usr/share/man/man3/MPI_Comm_set_name.3.gz . This is
documented in bug 299198, which led me to declare a conflict between
mpi-doc and lam4-dev, and also bug 310688, which noted that conflict
should not be necessary.
To resolve this, I just built and uploaded mpich 1.2.7-4 with the
manpage moved to an mpi-doc-specific name, and which includes the
following in mpi-doc postinst and prerm respectively:
update-alternatives \
--install /usr/share/man/man3/MPI_Comm_set_name.3.gz MPI_Comm_set_name.3.gz
/usr/share/man/man3/MPI_Comm_set_name_mpi-doc.3.gz 10
update-alternatives --remove MPI_Comm_set_name.3.gz
/usr/share/man/man3/MPI_Comm_set_name_mpi-doc.3.gz
Please move the MPI_Comm_set_name manpage in lam4-dev as well, and set
up a similar alternatives symlink. Then please declare a conflict with
mpi-doc (<< 1.2.7-4). When you do so, I will version the mpi-doc
conflict with lam4-dev (and close bug 310688), and people will be able
to install both without conflict.
