Dear Maintainer,
I just switched from KDM and to lightdm, and had to notice that ~/bin was
dropped from my PATH. The reason is that KDM sources ~/.profile on login, but
lightdm obviously does not.
This was also reported, and fixed, in Ubuntu:

This has already been reported as #636108. Same answer: profile is for
login (bourne shell), completely irrelevant to a DM.
