Package: libao4
Version: 1.1.0-2
Severity: normal
Hi,
since 2 weeks i´ve got "snapy" or "clicking" noises in mp3 (played by mpd)
wich are encoded with VBR (Lame 3.95 preset V0), the mp3´s with CBR are OK.
I guessing there is a problem with the actuall libao4 in wheezy.
Since my upgrade from the 15. June 2012 (/var/log/apt/history.log >
libao4:amd64 (1.1.0-1.1+b1, 1.1.0-2)) i recognized this strange noises in the
vbr mp3´ s.
It doesn´t matter if i use Alsa or Pulseaudio in the mpd.conf.
A Similiar behaviour i got with guayadeque but there it is not much worst like
with mpd. (and afaik guayadeque use another lib for audio output)
When i use vlc (also with alsa and pulse) everything is OK.
So i am pretty helpless.

That seems like a pretty wild stab in the dark, given libao doesn't have
anything at all to do with decoding mp3 ...

... and given you yourself say things not using libao have similar issues.
It may be a bug in some other thing actually decoding mp3, or it may just
be classic artifacts that mp3 is well known for. Perhaps you should try
encoding these files with Vorbis if quality is important.
It's clearly not a bug in libao though, unless your mp3s somehow depend on
the content of the libao.conf.5 manpage, which is all that changed for -2.
