Hi,
I had quite an unfortunate experience with the new assistant/webapp
feature in git-annex. I clicked on the menu icon, the webapp started and
git-annex started watching my home directory which happens to contain a
git repository, but no annex. I didn't get the "Welcome to git-annex"
prompt in the browser and git-annex started to watch and annex
everything. Then, I got scared ;) and just killed the git-annex process.
It appears to be due to a residual git-annex configuration in this
repository. Namely, I used to annex things there but later uninit the
repository. But the remaining annex.version=3 setting was enough to
trigger this unacknowledged watch.
The surprising (and scary) thing is that git-annex started to handle
files from another nested repository which already had an annex (namely
~/images) and broke it. I could fix it later with fsck, though. I also
had to reset the home repository a few commits back to get to the
original state and then deleted the annex.
I tried again with a fresh user and could easily reproduced this
behaviour. Deleting the "annex" section in the git repository
configuration is apparently enough to get the prompt in the webapp and
avoid the unexpected/unacknowledged watch.
I probably don't understand everything but these leftovers in the
repository configuration after uninit apparently have considerable
consequences...
