I ran an apt-get upgrade and iptables-persistent failed with the following 
error message:

On my system I have disabled IPv6 in the kernel by adding the following
line in my /etc/default/grub

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="ipv6.disable=1"
