Changes to openssl require the following change to pound:

Without it SSL breaks in a very nasty manner. Exact effect depends on
browser. Konqueror and IE barf from time to time. Mozilla barfs once and
for all and no longer allows connections to the pound/SSL driven site.
If client certificates are used IE will not retry the auth phase so from
pound's perspective the client will start appearing as unauthenticated.
So on so forth.
Normal load balancing and failover in non-SSL mode work OK.
