Package: qemu-system
openbios-{ppc,sparc} and openhackware are not necessary for any platform,
and they can only build on sparc or powerpc.
So maybe qemu-system should recommend them but not depend.
Does ipxe have same problem? can ipxe be built on architectures
besides i386/amd64?

This is a better way to resolve this problem.
While this doesn't resolve this problem completely.
I still don't see any problems per se.
The new way has two potential problems:
1) It is not friendly to Debian derivative distributions.
Most derivative don't support as many architectures as Debian,
So, it is difficult to build these firmware on these derivative
distributions.
This will make more delta between Debian and derivative distributions.
While making possible delta for derivates is a good goal, I
strongly disagree that this should be done in a way that makes
a package basically broken for some users. Note that the
move from Depends to Recommends changes nothing in this area,
since these Recommends will have to be removed from those
distributions who, for whatever reason, are unable to ship
these firmware files.
2) Qemu supports more architectures than Debian.
For a architecture that Debian doesn't support while Qemu support,
if it need firmware like ipxe or openbios, how can we support it?
ipxe is x86-specific. Openbios is built on sparc and ppc.
I have no solution for building these for a distribution which does
not work on these architectures, but it is certainly possible to
work around this by using a cross-compiler. This will benefit
debian too, since we'll be able to build these firmware files
on their non-native architecture, and it will give us an ability
to build all firmwares at once on any arch supporting these cross
tools. Patches are very welcome.
Note that we too have issues with firmware - for example, there's
no package for new ppc fw and some bits are missing for s390 (#684909
for example). But once these will be available, we'll add them
to Depends for proper packages.
But again, I'm strongly against making debian packages broken
here, especially since there's no benefit anyway.
Another problem is that too many packages may confuse users.
Well, that's one of my least worries. Users are asking to have
only the parts of qemu they really need, and I agree. Users
who want emulation of certain arch can install it just fine.
Again, we still do have qemu-system which installs all of
them at once, -- so it is a question of choice, now we offer
best of both worlds at once.
I'm closing this bugreport now.
Thanks,
/mjt
