Package: klogd
Version: 1.5-5
Owing to an unrelated problem, I ended up booting with a read-only /dev,
which resulted in /etc/init.d/sysklogd not creating /dev/log.
When that happens, /etc/init.d/klogd never completes. It runs klogd -x,
which spawns a child, which tells the parent its pid, then looks for
/dev/log, fails to open it, and exits.
The parent doesn't process the SIGCHLD and instead waits for some other
event, leading to a zombie child and a hung parent, and a hung boot
process.
It's an unusual circumstance, but some kind of error message and a clean
exit would be better.
Thank you!
