In the meantime the package has been removed and a timeout command is included in the coreutils package. If the issue you encountered is also applicable to timeout from coreutils (as released with Debian 7.0 wheezy or later) the maintainers would very much appreciate a fresh report using reportbug /usr/bin/timeout (you should also mention the number of this bug if you think it contains valuable information).
