to reproduce from a fresh xemacs, do:
m-x resize-minibuffer-mode
mark some text
esc-|
go to shell command output window
^X^S
enter a very long filename
ret
go back to the text window
esc-| again
go to the new shell command output window
^X^S
up arrow to get the filename you entered before
ret
xemacs will ask you whether you want to overwrite, but will not resize the
minibuffer.
