monit honours all files in /etc/monit/monitrc.d, including .dpkg-dist
left over by pressing N when asked if a config file should be
overwritten by an update, as happened with apache2 recently.
This makes the postinst script fail to restart monit and breaks monit
because it leaves monit with duplicate service definitions.

Thank you for reporting this, but I don't think it's a bug.
There is no line like: Include /etc/monit/monitrc.d/*
in the default monitrc. And it's a bad idea to add such one,
as clearly stated in README.Debian.
