Package: linux-image-2.6.21-1-amd64
Version: 2.6.21-4
Severity: important

The laptop periodically becomes permanently unresponsive and requires a reboot,
switching to a console reveals the
following message being printed continuously:

 "Jun 11 20:32:19 wildebeest kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
  Jun 11 20:32:39 wildebeest kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
  Jun 11 20:32:39 wildebeest kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
  Jun 11 20:32:39 wildebeest kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
  Jun 11 20:32:39 wildebeest kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
  Jun 11 20:32:39 wildebeest kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown"

Please note that using the linux-image-2.6.18-4-486 package the system only
becomes unresponsive for a few seconds once in a while. The system is somewhat
usable compared to the 2.6.21 kernel. The message received when running the
2.6.18 kernel is:

 "Jun 13 18:10:04 wildebeest kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
  Jun 13 18:10:04 wildebeest kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
  Jun 13 18:10:04 wildebeest kernel: hdc: DMA disabled
  Jun 13 18:10:04 wildebeest kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
  Jun 13 18:10:04 wildebeest kernel: VFS: busy inodes on changed media.
  Jun 13 18:17:35 wildebeest kernel: hdc: status timeout: status=0xd0 { Busy }
  Jun 13 18:17:35 wildebeest kernel: ide: failed opcode was: unknown
  Jun 13 18:17:35 wildebeest kernel: hdc: ATAPI reset complete
  Jun 13 18:17:35 wildebeest kernel: VFS: busy inodes on changed media."

The following is an excerpt from my /var/log/messages (while running the 2.6.21
kernel) that may be helpful (The call trace has only ever happend that single
time so it may be unrelated):
