Package: systemd
Version: 204-8
Severity: normal

I run up to date jessie systems. In the last few weeks, 2 of my computers
started failing to shutdown in Gnome 3. When I click my login name in the
upper right of the panel and select shutdown, the system hangs. I let it sit
for 40 minutes or so and it never shut down. This happens every time on these
2 systems.

In the syslog I see the following corresponding to the time when I tried to
shut down:

The systemd1 failed looks suspicious.

This means you are not actually using systemd as PID 1.
Please install systemd-sysv.
If you decide to stay with sysvinit for whatever reason, make sure
systemd-shim is installed (though it's not guaranteed at this point that
systemd-shim is continued to work in the future).
