Hi,

pppd doesn't work unless I manually modprobe the ppp_async module. This
is easily fixed by adding ppp_async to /etc/modules, but shouldn't this
happen automatically?

$ sudo wvdial
[sudo] password for jch:
--> WvDial: Internet dialer version 1.61
--> Initializing modem.
--> Sending: ATZ
ATZ
OK
--> Modem initialized.
--> Sending: ATDT*99#
--> Waiting for carrier.
ATDT*99#
CONNECT 3600000
--> Carrier detected. Starting PPP immediately.
--> Starting pppd at Tue Aug 19 14:15:56 2014
--> Pid of pppd: 2868
--> pppd: +[7f]
--> Disconnecting at Tue Aug 19 14:15:57 2014
--> The PPP daemon has died: No ppp module error (exit code = 4)
--> man pppd explains pppd error codes in more detail.
--> I guess that's it for now, exiting
--> The PPP daemon has died. (exit code = 4)

Yes. I expect that you are experiencing #749021.
Anyway, it is not pppd's job to load kernel modules.
