It seems 1.0.16 doesn't work on my HP ScanJet 5300C (avision driver).
I cannot scan anything, I either get
| scanimage: no SANE devices found
or
| scanimage: sane_read: Error during device I/O
Downgrading to 1.0.15-10 fixed the problem for me.
