The following command generates a (somewhat) bad PNM file:
scanimage --mode color --resolution 75 > foo.pnm
While I can view the file with gqview, gimp complains about "premature
end of file". Additionally, convert (from ImageMagick) gives an error
about "can't read image data".
Changing to "--mode gray" produces a correct pnm file. I've also
tried a number of other options to scanimage, but haven't found any
that make a difference. My scanner is an epson Perfection 610.

Please let me know if I should be sending this elsewhere, or if there
