currently in Debian/testing E17 is only launchable from GDM3 for me. With KDM,
XDM and lightdm executing enlightenment_start does not work.
Via Xsession and startx works too.

E17 used to work for me with lightdm, now I just checked, whether it is also
workable
with kdm. The answer is 'yes', so I think it is safe to close this issue.
