The versions of trans in Debian jessie, sid and rc-buggy are all broken.
This issue has been fixed upstream in version 0.8.23 and this commit:

I have tested 0.8.21 with the patch cherry-picked and it works for me.
I would suggest uploading 0.8.23 to Debian sid as 0.8.22 will not be
migrating to Debian jessie since we are late in the freeze.
I would suggest doing a tpu to fix the version in Debian jessie.
