Subject: Proximus/Skynet/Belgacom mirror malfunction warning [was:
Please verify FTP sync service]

Mail on request of cnote, regarding the bad sync status of the Skynet
(now Belgacom/Proximus) Debian mirror.

My logs specifically matter for the ISO images, as
Belgacom/Skynet/Proximus grabs them from the mirror I'm hosting
(ftp.be.debian.org <ftp://ftp.be.debian.org/> ), but I'm worried for the
general health of their mirror as well.

Last successful sync in 2015:
2015/09/07 16:00:01 [12846] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 16:00:01 [12846] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 16:00:01 [12846] building file list
2015/09/07 16:00:01 [12846] sent 86868 bytes received 425 bytes total
size 164482160580

Their next sync happened right when the Jessie 8.2 ISO files were being
regenerated:
2015/09/07 18:00:01 [12935] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 18:00:01 [12935] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 18:00:01 [12935] building file list
2015/09/07 19:22:55 [12935] file has vanished:
"/8.2.0/armel/iso-cd/debian-update-8.1.0-armel-CD-1.iso" (in debian-cd)
2015/09/07 19:22:55 [12935] file has vanished:
"/8.2.0/armel/iso-cd/debian-update-8.1.0-armel-CD-2.iso" (in debian-cd)
etc...

After that one, they still connected, but nothing got transferred.
2015/09/07 20:00:02 [27220] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 20:00:02 [27220] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2015/09/07 20:00:02 [27220] building file list

Then, the errors began:
2015/09/08 00:00:02 [3048] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2015/09/08 00:00:02 [3048] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2015/09/08 00:00:02 [3048] building file list
2015/09/08 00:39:13 [3048] rsync: read error: Connection reset by peer (104)
2015/09/08 00:39:13 [3048] rsync error: error in socket IO (code 10) at
io.c(785) [sender=3.1.1]

This continued for months !
First succesful sync again from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7):

2016/01/21 15:00:02 [4768] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2016/01/21 15:00:02 [4768] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2016/01/21 15:00:02 [4768] building file list
2016/01/21 17:03:08 [4768] sent 74109667286 bytes received 31698 bytes
total size 174744088028

Then the syncs stopped altogether, this is the last one:
2016/02/24 11:00:01 [11072] connect from mirror005.isp.belgacom.be
(195.238.1.7)
2016/02/24 11:00:01 [11072] rsync on debian-cd/ from
mirror005.isp.belgacom.be (195.238.1.7)
2016/02/24 11:00:01 [11072] building file list
2016/02/24 11:00:02 [11072] sent 92340 bytes received 425 bytes total
size 199072020154

On their official mirror page (ftp://ftp.debian.skynet.be/debian/)
there's this file :

Name
        Size Last
Modified
Archive-Update-in-Progress-mirror011.isp.belgacom.be 10/02/2016
     11:00:00

The http link ( http://ftp.debian.skynet.be/ftp/debian/, taken from the
mirror list) doesn't even work anymore.
Their cdimage (and entire contents of http://ftp.skynet.be/pub/) seems
to have vanished recently too.
No idea what their plan or update strategy is but I guess they're
silently dropping it.

I have no grudge against them, but I'd call their mirror "tainted" at best.
If they don't reply to inquiries, I'd suggest to drop 'em as a listed
mirror as many installs probably try to update using this out-of-sync
mirror.

Bart

Below the message I sent the mirror admin on September 8, 2015.
I had sent them an e-mail on 29/04/2014 as well, asking if they couldn't
generate the iso's locally - never got a reply but I did get a Read Receipt.
