I looked this up for 3.16.0-4-amd64 in Debian Jessie. I also tested and
the bug did no longer show. The same bug also affected ntfs-3g. I
assume that Debian 32-bit kernels and newer Debian kernels are without
this bug as well.
So there is no more need to work around with increasing buf_size.
