in that file he mentions
output from amixer can greatly differ from card to card. My Soundblaster 16
shows:
    Master 0 % (-14.00dB) : 0 % (-14.00dB)

but he doesn't say how he used amixer to get those results, i.e. what
is the amixer command line he used?

He mentions
The ``PCM'' setting is used for most applications. Programs like
mpg123, xmms, speakfreely, realplayer and most others use the PCM
    channel.

``MIC'' stands for microphone, ``line-in'' is an (optional) extra
input at the back of your sound card.

he says what MIC stands for, but not PCM.

doc-linux was last released with Debian 6.0 (squeeze) in
February 2011 and removed from Debian sid/unstable in 2012 (see
http://bugs.debian.org/668078 for details on the removal). Since
support for squeeze and squeeze-LTS has now ended, I'm closing all the
remaining bugs reported against this package.
