Package: apt-cacher
Severity: wishlist

It is unclear from the package descriptions what is the difference between
apt-cacher and apt-proxy, why there are two package in Debian with similar
purpose, which of these two should be choosen in particular situations.

Both package's description should either refer to each other mentioning
about the difference, or alternatively on of the packages control
files should include "Replaces:" header for the other.

Note: I reported this bug twice: for apt-cacher and apt-proxy.

"This is vim. It's an editor. There are many editors, but this one is
mine. For alternatives, look at ae axe blosxom boxes bvi cgdb cream dav

Is that what you want, or what exactly do you expect? Sounds like an
invitation to a long and verbose verbal pissing contest. I can hardly
write "this is the most stable one among <long list of alternatives>
because its BTS page is shorter". The description does already describe
the design goals behind apt-cacher, more comparisons require proof or
would create bad blood between developers.

If you don't know what you are looking for, you will find all by using
"apt-cache search apt proxy". If you know what you are looking for,
there are enough details to learn about unique features, eg. server and
CGI mode support.

I will mention the alternatives and that is all. And I won't abuse the
Replaces field, RTF Debian policy to learn what it should be used for.

Fine, fine. Let's see what they say.
