See THIS bug report, only with my root partition being /dev/hda6
        and a
        newer (SMP) kernel.

        http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=341049

Typing exit in the shell the kernel provides makes the system
        continue
booting and it appears to run without any problems so far.
My setup started as a base install from a sarge netinstall CD. I
        then
upgraded to "sid" in sources.list and installed all other
        software.
